Being a Husband and Father - Colossians 3

S - Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly. 21 Fathers, do not aggravate your children, or they will become discouraged.
O - Husbands and fathers are to do two things according to these verses. First, a husband should show love to his wife and never treat them harshly. The opposite of harsh treatment is courteous or polite treatment. Second, a father should not aggravate his children. The meaning of aggravate is to persistently annoy or exasperate. By doing this a wedge will form in that the child will not desire to be with his father.
A - Both of these commands pierce my heart as I am not always following this advise. I need to not only treat Christa with love and respect but also do it in a manner that is courteous, polite, and gentle. I need to be that chivalrous man that treats his wife with the utmost care and attention. As a father, I need to find a way to connect with each of my children individually. There are times that I can aggravate them. Another meaning for aggravte is to irritate intensely. When one of my children is intensely irritated there is no way in the world that they will want to run into my arms but instead they will run as far away as possible. I need to remember this and work on showing them love and acceptance, always.
P - God, Help me to be the husband and father that you have called me and commanded me to be for my wife and children. Give me wisdom and understanding to see how Christa and the kids are accepting what I am saying and doing to know if I am capturing their hearts. I desire to be both that husband and father that they so deperately need and want so that their hearts are full and they don't need to worry about that missing area in their life but can focus on what you have called them to do. I praise you this morning for all that you have done and continue to do! You have been the best example of a father and husband and I thank you for that example that I can follow. Bless my family and me today.
